Travelling to Estonia

Estonia is a member of the European Union and part of the Schengen Area. Nationals of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and any third-country national holding a residence permit of a Schengen state do not need a visa to enter Estonia. The only travel document required for these visa-free travellers is a national ID card or passport.

For more information on visa exemptions and requirements for visiting Estonia, please check the web page of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs – https://vm.ee/en – or contact your nearest Estonian representation – https://vm.ee/en/consular-visa-and-travel-information/estonian-representations-around-world

How to get here

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is accessible by plane, train, bus and ferry.

Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport has direct flights to many European cities. The flights from Oslo and Stockholm to Tallinn are all under 2 hours. You can fly from Helsinki to Tallinn in 20 minutes. More information about flight schedules is available on Tallinn Airport website – https://www.airport.ee/en/tallinn-airport/

It takes 10 minutes by taxi and around 15 minutes by bus to reach the conference venue or any centrally located hotel from the airport.

The Port of Tallinn connects Tallinn to Finland and Sweden by the ferry. The ferry ride from Helsinki takes around 2-2.5 hours. The trip from Stockholm to Tallinn is a 12-hour overnight ferry ride. Tallinn port is located a 15-minute walk from the city centre.

There are a number of international coaches passing through Estonia from central Europe and the Baltics. The bus station is situated in the city centre.

Other helpful information

Time: Estonia uses East-European Time (EET) which is one hour ahead of Central European Time (CET). It is GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer.

Electricity: European-style 2-pin plugs are in use.

Money and banks: Estonia uses the Euro from 2011. ATMs can be found all around Tallinn. Beware that an Estonian ATM gives you your money first, and only then returns the card. Worse, you have to ask the machine to give your card back. Luckily for you, these machines speak English.

Internet: Public Wi-Fi is available in nearly every café, restaurant and hotel as well as open spaces such as city squares and parks.
